Pilot Response: “Hold for the Citation Jet, then continue to 3 1 Right, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

Monitor the Ground Control Frequency while performing the run-up and avoid blocking any aircraft from taxing onto or off of the runway.

When run-up is complete, taxi and HOLD SHORT of the assigned runway while switching to the appropriate tower frequency, in this case 118.3 for the East (Short) Runway.

Pilot: “Boeing Tower, Archer 4-3-7-7-Niner is holding short of Runway 3 1 Right, ready for takeoff, Northeast Departure.”

The tower will respond with one of three possibilities: continue to hold short, taxi into position and hold, or cleared for takeoff.

Boeing Tower (hold short): Archer 7-7-Niner, hold short, landing traffic.

Pilot Response: “Hold short, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

Boeing Tower (position and hold): Archer 7-7-Niner, taxi into position and hold, Runway 3 1 Right.”

ALWAYS READBACK ANY CLEARANCE TO TAXI ONTO A RUNWAY WITH THE FULL RUNWAY NUMBER. ASK FOR CONFIRMATION IF ANY PART OF SUCH A CLEARANCE IS UNCLEAR. Anytime you taxi onto a runway turn on ALL LIGHTS AND TRANSPONDER to altitude mode.

Pilot: “Taxi into position and hold, Runway 3 1 Right, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

Boeing Tower (takeoff): Archer 7-7-Niner, wind variable at 6, Runway 3 1 Right cleared for takeoff, Northeast Departure approved, caution wake turbulence from a departing Challenger Jet on the parallel runway, traffic will be a helicopter departing from Pad One to the East.”

The most important part of the above phrase is “…Runway 3 1 Right cleared for takeoff…” Be certain to understand this part and ask for confirmation if necessary. Be certain that you are on the correct runway, and that takeoff clearance has been given.

Pilot Response: “Cleared for takeoff Runway 3 1 Right, will be looking for the traffic, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

During the initial part of the departure, tower may have you extend your upwind leg (continue straight out), turn an early crosswind and may ask you to look for and/or follow (or pass behind) other traffic.

If traffic is spotted, then you report, “Traffic in sight for Archer 7-7-Niner.” If traffic is not seen then you report: “Looking for traffic, Archer 7-7-Niner.” You continue to look for traffic until you both see and report the traffic or Boeing Tower reports that traffic is “no factor.” If there is any doubt as to the whereabouts of the traffic then you must ask Boeing Tower for an update on the traffic (example: “Boeing Tower, where is the traffic now for Archer 7-7-Niner?”)

After complying with any traffic avoidance requests, and once you are well clear of the Boeing Class D airspace, you may switch frequencies or turn down the volume. On some occasions Boeing Tower may say “Archer 7-7-Niner, frequency change approved.”

You may also request a frequency change when leaving Boeing’s airspace (not required) or while inside Boeing’s airspace by saying “Boeing Tower, Archer 7-7-Niner request frequency change.”

During the initial part of the departure, tower may have you extend your upwind leg (but do not continue your upwind beyond the airport boundary due to Sea-Tac surface Class B, say “Unable”), turn an early crosswind and may ask you to look for and/or follow (or pass behind) other traffic.

If traffic is spotted, then you report, “Traffic in sight for Archer 7-7-Niner.” If traffic is not seen then you report “Looking for traffic, Archer 7-7-Niner.” You continue to look for traffic until you both see and report the traffic or Boeing Tower reports that traffic is “no factor.” If there is any doubt as to the whereabouts of the traffic then you must ask Boeing Tower for an update on the traffic (example: “Boeing Tower, where is the traffic now for Archer 7-7-Niner?”)

After complaining with any traffic avoidance requests, and once you are well clear of the Boeing Class D airspace, you may switch frequencies or turn down the volume.

Runways: South Flow

Arrival Procedure: Vashon Arrival North of Reservoir (North Flow Equivalent- Vashon Arrival South of the Reservoir)

Reverse Procedure: Vashon Arrival

Obtain ATIS information before reaching Vashon Heights, on 127.75.

Pilot (over Vashon Heights): “Boeing Tower, Archer 4-3-7-7-Niner, over Vashon Heights, Vashon Arrival for full-stop landing with information Whiskey.”

Specify whether you plan to do touch-and-go landing practice or make a full-stop landing.

Boeing Tower: Archer 7-7-Niner, make right traffic (or downwind) for Runway 1 3 right, report the West Seattle Reservoir.

Pilot Response: “Right Traffic for Runway 1 3 Right, report the reservoir, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

The tower may also have you bypass a downwind and make an extended base. Tower will say: “Archer 7-7-Niner, enter a right base for Runway 1 3 Right, report crossing (some point)”

Upon reaching reservoir, notify tower that you are inbound for landing. Stay just to the north of reservoir to give separation to departing aircraft.

Pilot: “Boeing Tower, Archer 7-7-Niner is at the reservoir, inbound.”

Boeing Tower (possible response): Archer 7-7-Niner, make a right downwind for Runway 1 3 Right, traffic on base is a Duchess.

Pilot Response: “Right downwind for 1 3 Right, traffic in sight, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

Traffic may also be on downwind to the right of your position in which case the tower may have you either go ahead of the traffic or behind it. In any case, always look for traffic whether the tower has advised of traffic or not. Respond appropriately with traffic requests from the tower and always ask for confirmation when uncertain.

Boeing Tower: Archer 7-7-Niner, cleared to land Runway 1 3 Right.

Never land or perform a touch-and-go unless the above phrase has been received and clearly understood. If you are on final and the tower has not cleared you to land or perform a touch-and-go, ask, “Boeing Tower, Archer 7-7-Niner, confirm cleared to land Runway 1 3 Right?” If the tower does not respond with the above phrase then execute a go around and notify tower “Archer 7-7-Niner is going around.” Check radios for proper operation.

Pilot Response: “Cleared to land, Runway 1 3 Right, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

If touch and goes are to be performed the tower may say “Archer 7-7-Niner, cleared to touch-and-go, Runway  1 3 Right, after touch-and-go make right closed traffic.”

Pilot Response: “Cleared to touch-and-go Runway 1 3 Right, make right closed traffic.”

During rollout the tower may say, “Archer 7-7-Niner, turn left at the next intersection hold short of Runway 1 3 Left, remain on my frequency.”

Pilot Response: “Left at the next intersection, holding short of 1 3 Left, remain on your frequency, Archer 7-7-Niner.”

DO NOT CROSS ANY RUNWAY UNLESS THE TOWER HAS SPECIFICALLY CLEARED YOU TO “CROSS” THE RUNWAY AND YOU HAVE READ SUCH A CLEARANCE BACK TO THE TOWER IN A CLEAR MANNER. Confirm any doubts you may have by asking the tower. Always activate ALL LIGHTS AND TRANSPONDER whenever you are operating on a runway.

Boeing Tower: Archer 7-7-Niner, cross Runway 1 3 Left, contact ground on point niner on the other side.

Pilot Response: “Cross Runway 1 3 Left, ground on 121.9, Archer 7-7-Niner, thanks.”

After completing the after-landing checklist and switching to the ground frequency of 121.9, contact Boeing Ground.

Pilot: “Boeing Ground, Archer 4-3-7-7-Niner, at Alpha 2, taxi to Flight Center.”

Ground control my respond with a request such as hold for the traffic passing, then follow it or pass behind it. You may also be alerted to traffic you may encounter along your taxi back and be told to stay to the right.

Boeing Ground: Archer 7-7-Niner, stay to the right side for a Skyhawk opposite direction, taxi to Flight Center.

Pilot Response: “Stay to the right, taxi to Flight Center, Archer 7-7-Niner.”
